Ali Mukawas

Ali Mukawas was born in Latakia in 1955 and graduated from the Oily Photography Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University in 1978. He became a distinguished university professor in the field of visual arts and taught in Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Syria.
The artist uses earthy colors, and his expressive works often depict people clustered around a tree. In order to focus on humanity's collective nature, Mukawas chooses not to clarify facial features, but to leave them vague. To underscore the intimacy between man and nature, the feelings of past nostalgia and the village nature of coastal areas, his work involves multiple symbolic levels, including ritual spirituality. The captivating power of an undercover act is not only the constant interpretability of the subject, but also its philosophical projections regarding the concept of fertility, the return to nature and the rejection of the consumer world.
