Michael Kurcheh

Michael Kurcheh was born in Damascus in 1900 and died in 1973, and graduated from the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Paris and participated in a number of exhibitions with French peers. Michel Karshah is one of Syria's leading impressionists. He was creative in drawing natural scenes, Damascus neighbourhoods, people faces and personalities. Kurcheh returned to Damascus and taught in its secondary schools until his retirement in 1949. Distinguished in a quick manner and strong emotions during the drawing process, a painting was drawn in just a few minutes, reflecting what he thought of himself and what exemplified his current state. The artist used watercolours and oils, adopting combinations of bright and quiet colors to capture the reflection of the sun rays on the scenes and people he paints.

Michael Kurcheh contributed to the establishment of a number of artistic associations during the 1940s and continued to paint and hold exhibitions until his death in 1973.
