Abu Subhi Al-Tinawi

Abu Subhi Al-Tinawi (1888-1973) was born in Damascus, and was one of the most famous Syrian folk artists. His original name is Mohammed Harba, and since he opened his shop in Damascus, he has signed all his work as "Abu Subhi Al-Tinawi" as his first son. The Tinawi is from a family known for its artisanal skills in glass painting and textile work. He prepared his own colors using a traditional style that blends natural colors with Arabic gum. He was known for painting on glass inversely from the back - a technique rooted in Europe and then spread to Central and East Asia during the 17th century. The distinctive sign of Tinawi is the use of bright colors and a simplified incarnation of characters with clear expressions. From his passion for poems and legacy tales, the Tinawi transformed into an amazing storyteller who succeeded brilliantly in demonstrating the emotions of his community through popular themes.
